Art-A-Whirl is one of the largest open studio and
gallery tours in the Midwest, with more than 400 participating artists
drawing in more than 35,000 visitors to Northeast Minneapolis each
year. The Thorp Building and the Central Business Center are in the
heart of the
Northeast Minneapolis Arts District and with over
65
artists and two 25+ artists group shows are a must for your
Art-A-Whirl adventure.
Art-A-Whirl is organized by the
Northeast Minneapolis
Arts Association (NEMAA) and each year it publishes an artist
directory which is distributed through out the metro area in the weeks
leading up to Art-A-Whirl. Stop by the Thorp and CBC to get your AAW
directory.

Pure
Pleasure: 10 Years of Curating from Yuri Arajs
Presented by
Placement Gallery - CBC Suite 125
Placement Gallery, a project and gallery from Yuri Arajs, former
curator and Executive Director of Outsiders and Others Gallery,
presents “Pure Pleasure: 10 Years of Curating from Yuri Arajs”
featuring works by Douglas Padilla, Venus, Nicholas Harper, JAO, Greg
Gossel, Amy Rice, John Grider, Bill Borden, Ernest Miller, Jennifer
Davis, Jamie Carrera, Terrance Payne, Joe Aschebrook, Doug Forbes and
many more.
This exhibition brings together twenty artists that
Yuri Arajs has shown over the last 10 years in a weekend long event
with a free opening night reception with the
artists. The reception will be held Friday, May 16th from 6-10pm and
will feature a live speed painting
performance by JAO and music by DJ Espada.

Shattered Dreams/Dreaming of Shatters
Presented by the Minnesota Mosaic Guild - CBC Suite 153
See a kaleidoscope of colors and patterns in a variety of work by
members of the Minnesota Mosaic Guild (MMG) displayed in a 4,000 sq ft
warehouse at the Central Business Center. The group exhibit will be
held in Suite 153 and open for all of Art-A-Whirl weekend, with an
opening night reception from 5-10pm Friday, May 16th.
Over 25 mosaic artists will have their
works featured, with a selection available for purchase. Artists with
larger exhibits during the show include Lisa Arnold, Nicole Becken,
Rob Berra, Kim Buell, Laura Burlis, Laurie Christopherson, Stephany
Eaton, David Gardner, Gil Gragert, Mimi Holmes, Janine Irisarri, Barb
Keith, Linda Mix Yates, Georgia Pergakis, Karen Savage, Barbara Steen

and Music in the Freight Elevator

Local Musicians play noon - 10pm in the Thorp Building freight
elevator, a tradition since the inception of Art-A-Whirl. Music by:
Slim Dunlap, Molly Maher, Alicia Corbett, Robert Wilkinson, Larry
Ravenswood, Charlie Dush, Gabe Barnett, Mean Larry, Louis Dunlap,
Craig Teiken, Stacy K, Dan Antarctica and a very special appearance by Dan
the Accordion Man Turpening.
Fashion Show, hosted by Colleen Kruse,
starts at 4pm featuring fashions by
Laura Fulk, Mindy Martell, Nancy Pohl,
Ivan Idland, Greta Herman & Saira Huff
and a historical fashion review with Costume the Cities. The fashion
finale turns into a live photo shoot by Thorp Building photographer
Josh Stokes. After fashions stop by Suite 145 in the Thorp to meet the
designers. Boutique beer and wine samples, provided by Diamonds Coffee
Shoppe, will be available during the fashion show. Hair and Make-up
provided by AVEDA. Limited viewing area.

Kallsen Studio will be hosting an opening night wine tasting
reception Friday, May 16th from 5-10pm. Meet the artists and view
their current works while sampling a variety of wines and cheeses.
Studio will be open for all of Art-A-Whirl.
